Banana Farmer's Livelihood at Risk as Fungal Disease Spreads Across Reunion Island

Devastating fungal pathogen threatens livelihoods in neighboring islands, now approaching Reunion's vulnerable plantations.

Across the Indian Ocean, a fungal threat looms over one of Reunion Island's most economically vital crops. Gilbert Bafinal, a banana producer in the Ravine des Cabris district, has built his livelihood entirely around a single fruit. Ninety percent of his income depends on bananas, a concentration of economic risk that has left him sleepless as a devastating pathogen spreads through neighboring territories. The disease he fears, Tropical Race 4 fusariosis (TR4), has already ravaged plantations in Mayotte, the Comoros Islands, and Madagascar. It has not yet reached Reunion, but its proximity has triggered urgent mobilization across the island's agricultural sector. For farming families like Bafinal's, whose fields are predominantly planted with Grande Naine bananas, a variety considered particularly vulnerable to TR4, the threat is immediate and concrete. The prospect of uprooting plants, switching to resistant varieties, replanting, and waiting years to restore production capacity represents an economic catastrophe difficult to quantify. Bafinal acknowledges the possibility of resistant cultivars but harbors another concern: consumer preference. "What matters to the customer is taste," he explained. "Changing varieties, yes, but I fear the taste will no longer be there." Reunion has experienced banana shortages before, particularly after cyclones swept through the region. During such periods, prices exceeded eight to ten euros per kilogram for months. The establishment of TR4 in Reunion's soil would be fundamentally different. Certain parcels could become permanently unusable for current banana varieties, and the island would then depend more heavily on imports, with transportation costs inevitably reflected in retail prices. Bananas, a daily staple in Reunion, could gradually become a luxury item. Eric Lucas, diversity officer at the Reunion Chamber of Agriculture, emphasizes the urgency of collective vigilance. "We have had suspicions and alerts, but no confirmed cases," he stated. "The disease is very present in Mayotte, the Comoros, and Madagascar. This is alarming because people travel frequently and can bring the disease with them." His message to travelers is direct: the risk is too great to transport cuttings or plants from affected zones. TR4 is not a virus. It is a fungus that operates through a specific and relentless mechanism. Dr. Isabelle Robène, a researcher at Cirad within the Joint Research Unit for Plant Populations and Biological Pests in Tropical Environments (UMR PVBMT), explains the pathogen's progression: "The fungus penetrates banana plants at the root system level, then gradually invades the plant's conducting vessels." Leaves yellow, the plant weakens, and death follows. The most troubling aspect is the pathogen's persistence. Once established, it is extremely difficult or impossible to eliminate. Its spores can survive indefinitely in soil, and no chemical treatment can eradicate it. TR4 particularly attacks the Cavendish cultivar, which represents more than forty percent of global banana production and approximately ninety-nine percent of worldwide exports. In the Indian Ocean region, the fungus was detected in Mozambique in 2013, Mayotte in 2019, and Grande Comore in 2023. By contrast, the routes through which TR4 could reach Reunion are often mundane. For Reunion families, the risk of introduction frequently comes through seemingly innocent gestures: a cutting slipped into luggage, contaminated soil beneath shoes. In 2025, Reunion's customs authorities recorded 157 cases of illegal plant product introduction. Approximately thirty percent originated from mainland France, twenty-five percent from Madagascar, and nearly twenty percent from Mayotte, including products arriving from the Comoros via that island. Customs agents have received specific instructions regarding TR4 risk, and flights from Mayotte now receive enhanced monitoring. Regulations, governed by a prefectural order dated April 24, 2017, prohibit the introduction of fresh plant material without required phytosanitary procedures, whether by mail or in baggage. Violators face up to three years imprisonment and fines equivalent to twice the value of seized goods. On the ground, approximately fifty sentinel plots are monitored through an official system directed by the Departmental Agricultural and Forest Affairs Office (Daaf) and implemented by the Departmental Federation of Plant Protection Groups (FDGDON). Cirad has developed a rapid detection test usable directly in the field without heavy laboratory equipment. A positive result must be confirmed by the National Food Safety, Environment and Labor Agency (Anses) Reunion. Robène stresses the necessity of strengthening communication and awareness among travelers from affected zones, and mentions biosecurity measures such as disinfecting shoe soles after visiting contaminated regions. For Lucas, the message to the general public is straightforward: Reunion's varieties are excellent, and there is no need to seek alternatives elsewhere and risk bringing disease home. At this stage, no TR4 focus has been confirmed on the island. All current efforts aim to maintain that situation, so producers like Bafinal can continue their livelihoods and bananas remain accessible to all Reunion residents. As exchanges between Indian Ocean islands intensify, the question that agricultural authorities cannot yet answer is whether collective vigilance alone will prove sufficient to hold the fungus at a distance indefinitely.
